The Moorhouse Ranch is the 2008 winner of the AQHA-Bayer Best Remuda Award, which honors the breeders of top-notch ranch horses. From left are Bayer representative T.J. Haynes; AQHA Executive Committee member Peter Cofrancesco; Tom Moorhouse; his wife, Becky; his son, Gage; and brothers John and Bob Moorhouse. At an earlier reception at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum, Tom said, “A remuda’s the backbone of the working end of the ranch. … Our work demands versatility in our horses. We can’t change horses every time we need to do something. … Only one, the American Quarter Horse, has what it takes to be a member of our remuda.”

This year marked the inaugural WRCA Youth Co Horse Championship, with divisions for 13-17 and 12 and under. The competitors must complete a reining pattern, then box a cow, turn it on the fence at least once each direction and then either circle the cow or rope it. Custom buckles will be given to first place in each division. Alward Bits & Spurs and Dutton Rope Designs will provide prizes to second and third places.

The T Cross Ranch and Norris Cattle Co. team took a novel approach to stopping their cow in the wild cow milking. Announcer Hadley Barrett called it a combination of wild cow milking and professional wrestling.

Into the arena with some attitude: The Budweiser Clydesdales come
trotting in to the famous Budweiser jingle.

AQHA Executive Director of Publications Jim Jennings accepts a buckle from WRCA President Randy Whipple, naming him the 2008 WRCA Honorary Top Hand in thanks for his work on behalf of WRCA.

Callie Morton shows a custom-made leather-covered Bible to the crowd at the crisis and scholarship auction. The Bible sold three times; the first two buyers donated it back to be auctioned off again.

Auctioneer Gary Moore calls a winning bid during Saturday morning’s Crisis and Scholarship Brunch & Auction.

Standing with Zacks Proverb are, on the left, Kaylee, Jared, Bridget Taylor and (in front) Chesney and Tripper Taylor, and on the right, Wendell and Dianne Barrett. Jared Taylor, of Heart Bar T Horses, donated two yearlings – Zacks Proverb and Little Jose Lena – to the crisis and scholarship auction. Wendell bought both of them, as well as a Longhorn heifer donated by the High Card Ranch. Wendall actually traded the heifer to Jared in exchange for some horse training.

Phil Spangenberger, a director of the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association, tells the crowd at the crisis and scholarship auction about his organization and about the pocketwatch-style clock they donated. Phil is also well-known for his TV appearances that include the History Channel’s “Tales of the Gun” and A&E’s mini-series “The Story of the Gun.”

The WRCA uses Ranch Rodeo to bring attention to our cause and to generate money for our Foundation. We sanction the finest Ranch Rodeos across North America to bring the top Ranch Teams to the World Championship Ranch Rodeo held in Amarillo Texas the second weekend in November. Help in Times of Crisis – We provide funds for Working Ranch Cowboys and their families in times of need. Our support is confidential and requests generally come from neighbors, family and friends. The Working Ranch Cowboys Foundation has been helping people for 14 years.  Scholarships – The WRCF provides school funding support for Working Ranch Cowboys and their children. We currently have 32 Students in our program. The Foundation grows every year as does the number of Students we can support.
