FIRST GO-ROUND
First Performance
Friday Night
Photos and Results by: Holly Clanahan & Chad Hendrix

The Thompson Ranch penned three in Friday night’s team penning competition.
But for this team – which had two members injured in a car wreck in May – just being at the WCRR was a triumph. Tyler Thompson was unable to compete in the rodeo, but his brother, Trey, and family friend Keith Cypert – who were also in the wreck – are active competitors.

The Crutch Ranch and Milliron L Ranch team placed third in the first go-round of stray gathering, a new event at this year’s WCRR. In this event, a four-man team must head and heel two yearlings, then lay them down and tie three legs.

A team member from the Four D Land & Cattle/Yolo Ranch team tries to get this full-of-fight yearling on the ground so its legs can be tied in the stray-gathering event.

The American Quarter Horse Association recognizes the top Quarter Horse competing at the World Championship Ranch Rodeo. The registered horses are identified by saddle tags, and a program insert lists the horses’ sires and dams. Here, number 117, Cody Bee Steppin, owned by Cliff Mills of Rainbow Ranch, waits on his rider to return from tying a yearling in the stray-gathering event.

Jared Taylor of Heart Bar T Horses in Amarillo has graciously donated two horses to the Crisis and Scholarship Auction to be held Saturday morning. Here, he leads one of the yearlings on the auction block, Little Jose Lena, who is by Smart Jose by Smart Little Lena. Jared is riding the 2-year-old he donated to last year’s auction. That horse’s winning bidder sent the horse back to Jared to put 60 days training on.

Longtime rodeo announcer Hadley Barrett, center, is a pro at keeping audiences informed and entertained. His career has spanned more than 30 years, and he is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, only the fourth announcer to ever claim that honor.

As their riders get yearlings tied in the stray-gathering event, these two horses from the Sandhill Cattle Co. wait by the in-gate. In front is Lightning Blue Jazz, owned by Tyler Rice, who has been nominated for the rodeo’s top horse award.

The WRCA uses Ranch Rodeo to bring attention to our cause and to generate money for our Foundation. We sanction the finest Ranch Rodeos across North America to bring the top Ranch Teams to the World Championship Ranch Rodeo held in Amarillo Texas the second weekend in November. Help in Times of Crisis – We provide funds for Working Ranch Cowboys and their families in times of need. Our support is confidential and requests generally come from neighbors, family and friends. The Working Ranch Cowboys Foundation has been helping people for 14 years.  Scholarships – The WRCF provides school funding support for Working Ranch Cowboys and their children. We currently have 32 Students in our program. The Foundation grows every year as does the number of Students we can support.
